Finding Comfort in Scripture: Bible Verses for Grief

Bible verses for grief and loss, with a gentle word on how Scripture meets us in sorrow — and how to sit with it when words are hard to find.

Short answer

Scripture for grief includes Psalm 34:18, Matthew 5:4, Revelation 21:4, John 11:35 and Psalm 23. They do not rush you past the pain — they sit in it with you, promising that God is near to the brokenhearted and pointing to a future where every tear is finally wiped away.

Grief doesn't follow a schedule, and it rarely responds to tidy answers. If you're carrying loss, you don't need a verse that explains it away — you need to know you're not carrying it alone. Scripture doesn't rush mourning. It sits with it. Here are some of the passages that have kept company with grieving people for thousands of years.

Verses that sit with sorrow

  • Psalm 34:18 — "The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." Nearness, not a lecture.
  • Matthew 5:4 — "Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." Mourning is not a failure of faith; it is named and honoured.
  • Revelation 21:4 — "He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain." A promise of how the story ends.
  • Psalm 23:4 — "Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for you are with me." Through, not around.
  • John 11:35 — "Jesus wept." The shortest verse in the Bible, and one of the most comforting: God in the flesh, grieving a friend.

You don't have to feel better to be faithful

There's a quiet lie that grief and faith can't share a room — that a believer should "get over it" quickly. Scripture says otherwise. The Psalms are full of lament: honest, raw, sometimes angry. Bringing your sorrow to God exactly as it is — unpolished, unresolved — is itself an act of trust.

When you have no words

Some days you won't be able to pray a sentence. That's allowed. Sit with a single verse. Read it slowly. Let it be the prayer when you can't form your own. "Lord, I'm here, and it hurts" is enough.

A gentle space to grieve

If it helps to have somewhere to bring it, North Star offers a private journal with warm, Scripture-grounded reflection and gentle prompts — a quiet place to write what you can't say aloud, and to return to comfort when you need it. There's no timeline here, and no right way to do it. Be gentle with yourself, and let yourself be carried.
