Does YouVersion Have AI? What the Bible App Offers in 2026

Does the YouVersion Bible App have AI chat? What it offers in 2026, what its CEO has said about AI, and what an AI-assisted Bible app adds.

Short answer

As of October 2026, the YouVersion Bible App does not offer an AI chat that answers questions about faith or Scripture. In March 2026 its CEO, Bobby Gruenewald, said YouVersion had chosen not to launch one, because current AI models misquote Scripture too often. What YouVersion does offer is a huge, free Bible app: thousands of Bible versions and reading plans, Verse of the Day, audio Bibles, Guided Prayer and more.

A lot of people search for "YouVersion AI features", and it's a fair question. AI is turning up in almost every app, and YouVersion is the best-known Bible app in the world. So does it have AI, and if not, why not?

Here is what we could find from YouVersion's own App Store listing and from interviews with its leadership. We've listed our sources at the end so you can check them.

Does YouVersion have an AI chat feature?

Not at the time of writing. YouVersion's App Store listing, checked on 8 October 2026, describes reading, listening, reading plans, Verse of the Day, prayer and community features. It doesn't describe an AI chat or AI assistant.

That is a deliberate choice. In a March 2026 interview with Christian Daily International, Bobby Gruenewald explained that YouVersion uses AI internally, to speed up coding and improve its workflow behind the scenes. But it has chosen not to launch a public chatbot that answers theological questions.

The reason he gave was accuracy. He said that in their testing, even the best AI models misquote Scripture at least 15% of the time, and some as much as 60%. He said YouVersion would only adopt AI more fully if it could be done safely, and with accuracy and integrity.

In an earlier interview with The Christian Post, in November 2025, he raised another concern. When an AI tool invites people to "ask anything", some of those questions come from a painful place, and most AI systems fail to recognise signs that someone may be at risk of self-harm.

These are serious, thoughtful reasons. They are worth keeping in mind whichever Bible app you use, including ours.

What the YouVersion Bible App does offer

YouVersion is made by Life.Church and is free. According to its App Store listing, it includes:

  • More than 2,500 Bible versions in over 1,750 languages, with the app itself available in over 60 languages.
  • Offline downloads of selected Bible versions.
  • Audio Bibles for selected versions, with playback speed and timer controls.
  • Thousands of reading plans, on topics, books of the Bible, or the whole Bible in a year.
  • Verse of the Day, with Guided Scripture: a short video and personal reflection questions.
  • Guided Prayer, and a Prayer feature for writing your own prayers.
  • Videos from organisations such as BibleProject and The Chosen.
  • Search for what the Bible says about a topic.
  • Tapping a verse to see your notes and related content, such as videos, plans and study notes.
  • Highlights, bookmarks, notes and shareable Verse Images.
  • Friends: an activity feed, comments on the Verse of the Day, shared prayers and doing plans together.

The listing says the app is on over 500 million devices worldwide. If you want a broad, free Bible with an enormous library of plans and a way to read alongside friends, YouVersion is hard to beat.

What does an AI-assisted Bible app add?

An AI-assisted Bible app isn't a better Bible. The Bible is the same. What AI can add is help that responds to you. For example:

  • A daily devotional shaped around where you are, rather than the same text for everyone.
  • A plain-English answer to a question that comes up while you read, like "Who were the Pharisees?" or "Why does Paul say this?"
  • A thoughtful response to something you've written in a journal, pointing you to passages that speak to it.

The risks are real too. AI can misquote, sound more certain than it should, or be careless with private things like prayers. Gruenewald's concerns above are exactly the right ones. A good AI Bible app should show you where things come from, admit its limits, and send you back to the text and to your church. We've written a checklist on what to look for in a Christian AI app, and a wider look at whether AI can help you study the Bible.

Where North Star fits

North Star is a much smaller app than YouVersion, made by two people in Wigan, and it does a different job. It is built around a daily rhythm rather than a huge library. In North Star you can:

  • Get a daily devotional personalised to your name, your faith stage and the teaching tradition you choose.
  • Follow 12 reading plans across 4 depth levels, including Psalms, the Sermon on the Mount, Advent and Easter.
  • Read any chapter in 10 translations, with audio in ESV, KJV and WEB, plus the NKJV New Testament.
  • Keep a faith journal with warm, Scripture-grounded reflection on what you write.
  • Keep prayer requests and gratitude entries, and share prayers on a prayer wall.
  • Ask anything about faith, God or Scripture, and highlight or note any verse.

There is a free tier, and an optional Premium subscription with a 7-day free trial on the App Store. Your journal and prayers are encrypted at rest, and we do not sell your data.

We take the accuracy concern seriously. AI can get things wrong, which is why the full Bible sits inside the app. Whenever North Star mentions a passage, we'd encourage you to open it and read it for yourself.

If you want the widest choice of translations, languages and plans, YouVersion is the better fit. If you want a daily devotional shaped around you, with somewhere to journal and ask questions, North Star may suit you. Plenty of people use both.
